Esther Marian Fornah, mines compliance officer of the Sierra Leone National Minerals Agency (NMA) attached to the Freetown International Airport in Lungi was arraigned in court July 7 for allegedly defrauding a British diamond dealer and businessman Jason Barrett the sum of $84,000. The accused was charged with two counts of conspiracy to defraud contrary to law and larceny contrary to section 32(1) of the Larceny Act 1916.
A summary of the charge sheet indicated that the accused, Esther Marian Fornah, on Monday 26th April 2021, at Freetown International Airport Lungi, conspired together with Jabbie Sheriff, Eddie Harry Taylor, Mr Kamara, Abdul and other persons unknown to defraud Jason Barrett 64 carat pieces of diamond valued $84,000 (equivalent to Le848 million). Count two in particular states that the accused, on the aforementioned date and place, stole 64 pieces of gold from Jason Barrett valued at $84,000.
Arraigned before Magistrate Sahr Kekura of Court No.1, the accused pleaded not guilty to the offences charged. The police prosecutor ASP Ibrahim Sheik Mansaray then asked for an adjournment to have a proper conference with the witness. Thereafter the defense counsel applied for bail but same was objected to by the prosecution.
Magistrate Sahr Kekura however ruled that he would like to hear the evidence before considering bail. He, therefore, remanded the accused in custody until July 12.
