Arising from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s interest in protecting the environment and combating climate change and environmental challenges in the Middle East region, represented in rising temperatures, low level of rainfall, higher dust waves and desertification, which in turn constitute an economic threat to the region, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announces two green initiatives.
A statement made available to Summit Post explained the Green Saudi Initiative is aimed at improving the quality of life and protecting succeeding generations through increase in the level of vegetation, reduction of carbon emissions, combating pollution and land degradation, and preservation of marine life. Under this initiative, Ten Billion (10,000,000,000) Trees will be planted within the Kingdom, thereby representing more than 4% of the global contributions to reduce carbon emissions, and aiming at raising the electricity generation within the Kingdom to 50% by the year 2030 using a renewable energy program.
The Middle East Green Initiative: This initiative will see the planting of Fifty Billion (50,000,000,000) Trees in the Middle East Region in partnership with the countries of the Gulf region and other Middle East countries, and in collaboration with all allies amongst countries and organizations who look forward to working with the Kingdom to achieve this aim. It is a regional blueprint launched by the Kingdom to contribute immensely to the realization of the global objectives of combating climate change, representing 5% of the global target of planting one trillion trees, which will reduce the global carbon rate by 2.5%. This joint effort will also contribute to reducing carbon emissions by more than 10% of the global contributions in that regard. It will enhance the region’s hydrocarbon technology efficiency.
